Psychos for Spring 2018
Under a ceiling strewn with Sterling Ruby pieces, Raf Simons and Pieter Mulier presented their Spring 2018 collection for Calvin Klein. Riffing on the shapes and style of their debut collection, the designers built on diner uniforms and traditional suiting while injecting new elements like opera coats and full skirts. All this was underlined with a perverse twist—see the rubber dresses and Warhol knife prints—that evoked not only the horrors of cinema but some of the real world horrors we are living. Let's end on a brighter note: 5 things to know about the show are below and Nicole Phelps's review will be in shortly.
The A-List Crowd
Like last season, Calvin Klein gathered a major celebrity crowd for its front row. There was Lupita Nyong'o beside Mahershala Ali, Millie Bobby Brown laughing with Brooke Shields, and Russell Westbrook and Jake Gyllenhaal both rocking Shields-embossed pieces. A host of models, from Carolyn Murphy to Abbey Lee to Karlie Kloss, were in attendance too, as well as CK's new spokeswoman Paris Jackson.
The Kaia Moment
Those wondering where Kaia Gerber would turn up first now have their answer. The 16-year-old daughter of Cindy Crawford wore one of the diner-inspired opening looks.
The Warhol Photos
Anyone following Raf Simons's career knows the man loves a photo print. Tonight he used iconic Hollywood photography by Andy Warhol as a motif on denim, skirts, and dresses. (Note Dennis Hopper's visage on a white tank.) The prints were complemented by logos and the occasional colorful graphic—are those inkblots or feathers?
The Couture Nods
From the ball skirts to the opera coats to the crystals that lined the front of pumps and boots, there were many couture shapes and spirits in Simons's latest collection. Some came in subversive fabrics, like Julia Nobis's frock in mock plastic, while others, like Linesy Montero's, were done in heavy leather with a black ink treatment. Either way, it's high society for the downtown set.
The Fringe
Goodbye feathers, hello fringe! Last season's diaphanous, and celebrity-loved, feather dresses have transformed into long, swishy fringe for Spring.Read more at:long bridesmaid dresses | short bridesmaid dresses
